August Legislative Update

As Congress works toward resolution on the surface transportation bill, Scenic America celebrates the inclusion of several key scenic priorities in the legislation, including support for utility undergrounding, funding for gateway communities, and funding for scenic byways. 

 

Celebrating Maryland's Newest All-American Road

Scenic America President Mark Falzone joined Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) and state and local officials for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the Chesapeake Country Byway's recent designation as an All-American Road.

 

Knoxville Wins Sign Code Battle, Establishes Tree Fund

Our Scenic Knoxville affiliate secured recent scenic wins with new signage code standards in the city's institutional district and a tree preservation fund now in place. 

 

Ohio DOT Expands Byways Eligibility 

The Ohio Department of Transportation is opening scenic byways designations to more roads, thanks to a policy change that went into effect July 1. Now any state, county, municipal, or township road or highway can apply for a designation.  

 

 

Placemaking Spotlight: Charlottesville, Virginia

Thomas Jefferson's architectural sensibility, reflected in his Monticello home and in the University of Virginia, contributes to Charlottesville's long legacy as a community of character and model for placemaking principles.
 

 

Scenic Heroes: Hal Kassoff

Kassoff's appreciation for highway aesthetics and expertise in transportation planning has helped create safer and more scenic roadways across the country.
