March News from Scenic America


This month we applauded Congress for funding scenic byways in the 2022 Consolidated Appropriations Act. We also shared details about the Federal Highway Administration's byways grant application process to tap into this funding, which also presents a few significant challenges to potential recipients. Biden Signs Appropriations Act with $6 Million for Byways

Despite the challenging budget environment, the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2022, signed into law on March 15 includes an additional $6 million for the National Scenic Byways Program, a win for Scenic supporters.

 
 

FHWA Byways Grant Application Cycle Poses Challenges

The Federal Highway Administration announced that the National Scenic Byways Program 2022 Grants and Technical Assistance Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is now available. $22 million will be awarded, but there are issues with the process. The application timeline is too tight, and program requirements were not communicated in advance. Click to urge the FHWA to take action to amend this process. 

 

Infrastructure Update: President's Plan Outlines Undergrounding Grant Timeline and Uses

The White House released a guidebook to President Biden's Building a Better America plan that provide preliminary information about its plan to offer $5 billion in grants to enhance the resilience of the electric grid. Applications are expected to open in the 4th quarter of 2022.
