I am writing to ask that you please co-sponsor H.R. 5158, a bill to reopen nominations to the National Scenic Byways Program, which has been inactive for 6 years. National Scenic Byways recognize and help protect historic, scenic and culturally significant roads across the country. The designation brings substantial recognition and economic benefits to nearby communities by attracting visitors who spend money on local businesses and services. However, the lack of federal support for the program is jeopardizing the continued viability of these special roads and their roles as economic engines. A recent survey found that 44 byways in 24 states are prepared to seek designation as National Scenic Byways as soon as the program is restarted. The Federal Highway Administration has stated that reopening this program would not require any additional funding -- it simply requires approval from Congress! I therefore strongly support reopening the National Scenic Byways Program. I look forward to hearing how you will act on this matter. Sincerely,
